Could Solar Roads Reduce Pollution?

Scientists have spent a good part of the decade trying to improve solar-powered panels which are used in harvesting energy from the sun. While modular panels are widely being used in houses and commercial spaces, the idea of installing them on roadways is picking up steam fast. But the latest idea to hit the streets (literally) is that of paving the roads with solar panels made of ruggedized glass in place of the usual asphalt.

Roads that Pay for Themselves

As far as solar technology news goes, while this plan seems a bit crazy and unorthodox, it’s the idea of Scott and Julie Brusaw who are residents of Idaho. The husband and wife team developed their modular pavement system back in 2009. Today the couple claims that solar panels that will be used in their project can withstand a load of over 250,000 pounds (which happens to be four times the legal weight of a semi truck) and can last for up to twenty years. The robust panels will also be able to melt both snow and ice on contact along with providing warm light via LED bulbs so that drivers can see debris along the road.

The solar panels are basically the same as those which are used in normal solar panels which are used in houses. The solar panels are then encased in specially designed version of bullet proof glass, which has been developed and tested at the top materials and research institutes at Penn State and University of Dayton. The base layers of the solar panels which will be used in the project will be made of 10% recycled glass, which from a manufacturing point of view is the most cost effective way of churning up the material for this monumental undertaking.

After building and testing the prototype courtesy of funding from the FHA (Federal Highway Administration) the couple plans to install their solar panels throughout the U.S. which will be a pretty big project considering the amount of highways and motorways that are in the U.S already.

Co2 Reduction

A grid of using solar roads will not only help generate electricity for street lights and quite possibly surrounding homes, but could also significantly reduce the CO2 levels in the atmosphere by providing a means of clean reusable energy. The long term aspiration of the couple is to replace the power grid with a smart grid, which will not only help the environment, but also the economy as well.

The Latest Update

According to the latest in solar technology news regarding Solar Roadways, the project is already the highest grossing campaign in the history of IndieGogo, and while its run on the crowd funding website still has a few days until it ends, the Solar Roadways campaign has gone way passed its initial goal of one million dollars. What made all this possible was the contributions that have been made by more than thirty-five thousand people from over forty countries. Way to go Scott and Julie!

Technology Leading Us to Inhumanity?

Many of you may get astonished looking at the headline of this article. You may think that this writer has gone crazy or something. Technology which has made our life better than we ever thought of and now this writer is saying that technology is making us inhuman. I will say, yes it is.

A few days ago I saw a report on TV. The reporter was reporting about the sufferings of some poor people who could not even eat two meals a day. But the reporter did not help them on spot. Just make a report to telecast. That means sufferings of people are being used as products to get famous or to earn livelihood. Another incident was, a few days ago in a convocation ceremony of a University one of the guests got fainted on the spot. There were about 300 students but none of them rushed to help the guest. Rather they took picture of him and send the news to their friends and relatives, twitted on twitter and shared on Facebook and other social networking sites. They did not even think of helping the person rather they just took the opportunity to make it breaking news.

Now we have the technology to broadcast anything live from the spot. Anyone can be a reporter using his/her mobile cameras while they are moving in the streets and some accidents happen. We can’t control what should be broadcasted and what should not be. But we should think before we do anything.

I remember a classic movie named “Roman Holiday” in which a princess came to Italy to travel. But as she was a princess she could not move around freely. So his parents used to control her and gave her sleeping pills at night. One night she came out without her parents’ permission to travel but felt asleep on the streets as an effect of the sleeping pills. A journalist found her and took her to his house. Next day a report came on a missing girl. But it was not mentioned that she was a princess. Seeing the report the journalist understood that she is the one whom he took home last night. He could have spread the news in public that he had found the princess and gain money and popularity. But he did not do so to save the honor of the princess and her family.

In schools and colleges students are having sexual intimacy and making video of them and spreading them in the internet. Some people are blackmailing their girlfriends and their family. Our culture and social values are being destroyed.

We can’t stay without technology but we should make ourselves mature enough to adopt with the advancement of technology. We should film ten videos with cultural and educative values if we film one pornograph.

Books and Technology

With our rapid evolution in the world of technology, one should never be surprised at new and unique outlets for expression. Not only does the internet make new art forms available to us, but it also opens up the options to become collaborative and get involved.

Nowadays, writers have the option to instantly send their books to editors and peers over the internet. This leads to quicker turnover rate, and allows the writer to receive feedback almost instantaneously. While many believe that the rise of internet technology signifies bad news for novel authors and editors, others believe that it is the perfect too to write and publish more efficiently.

If you’re an author, you’ll know how difficult it is to get your books published. If getting published isn’t difficult enough, it’s almost equally as difficult to get other people to take the time out of their day to read your material. The internet allows of quicker access to your reading material, and gives you the option to spread your work throughout a myriad of sources.

With the use of television, social networking sites, and video games constantly being on the rise, we are running into the risk that books are slowly becoming phased out. Why should we spend six hours reading a book when we can relax and get the entire story in a two hour movie? Well, there are many reasons why reading material is essential to human growth and development.

First, books allow us to use our imagination in a way that television and movies cannot. While reading a novel, we can contemplate on issues such as character development and emotion. Regardless of how many people read the same novel, the protagonist will always be viewed slightly differently in the minds of each individual reader. Furthermore, reading often acts as a type of therapy for many people. Most readers tend to find something in a character with which they identify, and through that connection, the reader and writer are able to take a journey together. Essentially, the writer cannot exist without the reader, and vice versa.

Because American children are reading less and less, due to the influx of media and television sources, they are becoming increasingly illiterate. While we cannot force children to read, we must encourage them as much as possible to choose books over movies at a young age. Watching the screen turns people into consumers, whereas reading turns people into the creators. Many studies show that encouraging reading at a young age greatly improves one’s learning and attention skills later in life.

Learning to effectively read and write also help to improve one’s overall attention span. If you are successful and well-trained in literacy skills, you are sure to go a long way. Many people don’t realize how important writing skills are to succeed in life, but if you are searching for a top notch career, chances are that you will have to be a decent writer. It’s as simple as this: Reading books greatly helps to improve your overall writing skills.
